Saturday 30th May

Dorothy and Val picked us up around 9.30 and today we visited Whiskeytown Lake
and French Gulch

Whiskeytown Lake is a huge lake and recreational area favoured by many for watersports and fishing, and French Gulch (pop. +/- 250) is an old Victorian goldming/logging town which was virtually destroyed by a massive forest fire in August 2004.

A few of the old buildings were saved including a wonderful old bar
full of historic artefacts dating back to its mining/logging era. I had visited it the last time I was here and was keen for Terry to see it. At first we thought the bar was closed but on asking a ‘local’ we found our way in by going round to the back of the building.

From there we headed back to Redding as Dorothy had accepted a lunch invitation which was to include us. There were 12 of us there and we spend a happy couple of hours listening fascinating snippets of local gossip by ‘ladies who lunch’. The food was lovely, and the view from the house was uninterrupted hills and countryside. Lovely.
It had been another very hot day with temperature in the high 90's so a quiet evening was spent at Stephen’s house swimming and playing a hilarious game of cards.
